Goaltending can be the most physically and mentally demanding position on a team yet often lacks specific coaching support needed for improvement. Some attributes of goaltending may come naturally; however, the development of outstanding goaltenders comes through expert instruction and the practice of specific skills. We would like to offer you a goaltending development service built on 15 successful years of competitive goaltending and instructing experience that will improve performance.

ABOVE THE CREASE GOALTENDING has been formed to meet the need for specialized goaltending instruction. The goal of the ATC Goaltending is to provide quality goaltending instruction to individuals at all levels by building a solid foundation of technical skills and work ethic. The basis of ATC Goaltending relies on 4 pillars: skating, crease movement, save technique and recovery. The Owner/Operators of ATC Goaltending are Dave Rathjen and Jamie McCaig.

Dave grew up playing AAA hockey in Penticton, B.C. before going on to a successful junior career playing for the Penticton Panthers (BCHL), the Vernon Vipers (BCHL), and TriCity Americans (WHL). After junior, he attended the University of Alberta and played for the Golden Bears Hockey Program winning the national university championships in 2005. In 2005-2006, he signed a professional contract with the United Hockey League’s Muskegon Fury and attended their training and exhibition camp. Dave has been instructing goalies for the past 10 years and has gained experience as the Head Goaltending Instructor for the Okanagan Hockey School and the University Of Alberta Golden Bears Goalie School. Dave has also worked for The Hockey Program (Donnon Elementary and Vimy Ridge Academy) as well as World Pro Goaltending in Calgary, Alberta. Dave is currently working with ST FX Hockey Academy, Leduc Minor hockey as well as numerous other clients.

Jamie grew up playing AAA hockey in Prince George, B.C. before also going on to a successful junior hockey career with the Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL), Regina Pats (WHL), Penticton Panthers (BCHL) and the Merritt Centennials (BCHL). After concluding his junior career, Jamie went on to play for Brandon University Bobcats (CIS) and the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (CIS). After completing his Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Lethbridge, Jamie went on to play for the Anchorage Aces (WCHL), Victoria SalmonKings (ECHL) and the Bakersfield Condors (ECHL). Jamie has been instructing goaltenders for the past 10 years where he worked for the Goaltender Development Institute, OHS Hockey Schools and the University of Lethbridge Hockey School. Jamie is currently working with MillWoods Minor Hockey and ST FX Hockey Academy.
